Shamwari means friend in Zimbabwean and these cuddly little hand knitted dolls want to be your friend! They are very excited about their new adventure and are wearing their favourite sweater just in case it gets chilly!
Shamwari dolls are hand knitted in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has a huge unemployment rate (currently at 85%) and so a group of local women was brought together to create these cute Shamwari dolls in order to provide them with employment opportunity. Knitting was chosen as it only requires basic materials and can be done anywhere and at anytime, which suits the lifestyle of a Zimbabwean woman! in 2008, there was a small team of 6 knitters and now there are over 60 and growing!
Each Shamwari is lovingly hand made and is as individual and cheerful as the lady who knitted it! Each doll comes with information about how they were made and who made them, including a photo of the lady who knitted the doll.
This particular hand knitted doll is approx 40cm tall and includes a mini sized baby being carried the traditional African way, on the back. The detail is so adorable, down to their little tails and curious expressions. Lots of colours available.
We are proud to be supporting such a great initiative that provides employment to Women in Zimbabwe. Not only that, but 100% of the profits from the sale of our Shamwari dolls goes to our partner, AYI Centres, to provide much needed resources to the youth centres supporting education for children in Ghana.
